Family Support For Dieting

I never thought that families could be unsupportive of weight loss.  I mean sure they don’t actually change their diets to match yours sometimes, which can be frustrating.  But a friend of mine comes from a family where weight was always an issue.  The family in general has never been fat, had health problems, etc.  But they’re a bit neurotic, and she’s had some extra weight in comparison. It still puts her in a healthy weight range.  But honestly, it’s a big extreme when she was always on a diet since age 8.

That’s a bit of a big deal to say the least.  In a way, gaining some weight over the years was a way of rebellion.  But now, she’s decided that being a size 10 is not a good thing, that she wants to lose some weight, and so she’s researched and found a good diet and exercise program that she could keep up in the future and really is a good thing.  So far, she’s lost about 20 pounds, and I think it’s great.

But at about the 10 pound range, it astounded me when her family started making negative comments about the weight loss.  The girls in the family are in the range of size 0-2.  But at that point, it suddenly turned into well you’re fine just the way you are and then comments about her getting “too skinny.”  This is something that is honestly beyond me.  You bug someone about a thing all their lives, and then when they finally do it for themselves, you turn the tables around?
